Zinsser B-I-N is a shellac-based primer and stain blocker. It’s one of the most effective products for sealing in stains, odors, and knots in wood, and it works well on challenging stains like nicotine, watermarks, and mold. It's perfect for both interior and exterior applications and can be applied to a wide range of surfaces, including wood, drywall, plaster, metal, and more.

Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to use Zinsser B-I-N:

1. Prepare the Surface:

  • Clean the area: Remove any dirt, dust, grease, or stains from the surface. Use a mild detergent and warm water, then dry thoroughly.

  • Sand glossy surfaces: Lightly sand any shiny or smooth areas (especially wood or metal) to improve adhesion. This step isn’t always necessary but can be helpful for better bonding.

  • Repair surface imperfections: If there are any cracks, holes, or damage, repair them before applying the primer.

  • Mask off areas: Use painter's tape and drop cloths or plastic sheeting to protect areas you don’t want to prime (like trim, windows, or furniture).

2. Stir or Shake the Primer:

  • Shake well: If you're using the spray version, shake the can thoroughly for 1-2 minutes before using.

  • Stir well: If you're using the can version, stir the primer to ensure it’s well-mixed.

3. Application: Using a Paintbrush or Roller:

  • Brush application: Use a high-quality brush (preferably a synthetic bristle brush) to apply Zinsser B-I-N. Work in thin, even coats for the best results.

  • Roller application: If you’re using a roller, make sure it’s a short nap roller (1/4" or 3/8") to avoid texture marks. Apply thin, even layers and avoid overloading the roller.

  • Work in sections: For large areas, apply in small sections to maintain a wet edge and avoid streaking.

  • Multiple light coats: If you need a second coat, wait 1-2 hours between coats (drying time will vary with temperature and humidity).

4. Allow to Dry:

  • Dry to the touch: Zinsser B-I-N is a fast-drying product, and it usually dries to the touch in about 15 minutes.

  • Recoat time: You can apply a second coat after 1-2 hours if necessary.

🌡️ Tip: Drying times may vary depending on temperature and humidity, so be sure to check if it’s fully dry before applying another coat.

5. Apply Additional Coats if Needed:

  • If the stains or odors are still visible after the first coat, apply a second or third coat of Zinsser B-I-N until the surface is completely sealed and the stains are blocked.

6. Topcoat (Optional):

  • Once Zinsser B-I-N is completely dry, you can topcoat with your desired paint finish (latex, oil-based, or other topcoats).

  • Sanding: Lightly sand the surface with fine-grit sandpaper if you want a smooth finish before applying your topcoat.

  • Zinsser B-I-N can be top-coated with almost any type of paint, including latex, oil-based, and alkyd paints.

Extra Tips:

  • Ventilation: Zinsser B-I-N is shellac-based and has a strong odor. Make sure the room is well-ventilated, or wear a mask if you're working in a closed area.

  • Clean up: Clean brushes, rollers, and other tools immediately after use with methylated spirits or denatured alcohol. Once the primer has dried, it’s much harder to clean.

  • Stains and odors: Zinsser B-I-N is excellent for blocking tough stains and odors, including smoke, water damage, mold, and pet stains. If you're covering something like smoke or mold, make sure the surface is fully cleaned and dry first.

  • Fast-drying: Because it dries quickly, you can apply multiple coats in a short period, but always allow enough time for each coat to dry properly.
