Filling gaps in grout is a pretty straightforward DIY task! Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you do it right:

What you need:

  • Grout (matching your existing grout color)

  • Grout float or rubber grout spreader

  • Grout sealer (optional but recommended)

  • Sponge

  • Bucket of clean water

  • Toothpick or small tool (for small gaps)

  • Utility knife or grout saw (if removing old grout)

  • Clean cloth

Steps:

  1. Clean the area

Remove any loose grout or debris from the gaps. You can use a grout saw or utility knife to clean out any crumbling grout if necessary. Wipe the area clean and let it dry.

  2. Prepare the grout

If you’re using powdered grout, mix it with water according to the package instructions until you get a smooth, peanut butter-like consistency. For premixed grout, just have it ready to use.

  3. Apply the grout

Use a grout float or rubber spreader to press the grout into the gaps. Hold the float at a 45-degree angle and work diagonally across the tiles to push grout deep into the gaps. For very narrow gaps, you can use a toothpick or a small tool to push grout in before smoothing it out.

  4. Remove excess grout

Once filled, scrape off excess grout with the float or a damp sponge before it dries.

  5. Clean the tiles

After about 10-15 minutes, wipe the tiles gently with a damp sponge in a circular motion to remove grout haze. Rinse the sponge frequently and avoid washing grout out of the gaps.

  6. Let it dry

Allow the grout to cure as per the instructions (usually 24-72 hours).

  7. Seal the grout (optional but recommended)

After the grout has fully dried, apply a grout sealer to protect it from moisture and stains.
