Here’s a quick practical guide on how to look after your Christmas tree so it stays fresh, full, and festive throughout the season:
🎄 1. Choose a Fresh Tree
Look for needles that are flexible and don’t snap easily
Gently pull a branch—very few needles should come off.
The trunk should feel sticky with sap (a good sign it was recently cut).
🎄 2. Make a Fresh Cut at the Base
Before placing the tree in the stand:
Cut about 2–3 cm off the bottom to open up the pores.
This helps the tree absorb water properly.
🎄 3. Use a Sturdy Tree Stand With a Large Water Reservoir
Trees can drink up to 1–2 litres of water on the first day.
Choose a stand that holds plenty of water.
🎄 4. Water Generously (and Consistently)
Fill the stand with water immediately after the fresh cut.
Keep water above the base of the trunk at all times—if it runs dry, the tree seals up and won’t drink again.
Check water daily, especially during the first week.
🎄 5. Keep It Cool
Trees last longer when kept away from:
Radiators and heaters
Fireplaces
Direct sunlight
Vents or drafts
Cooler rooms = longer-lasting needles.
🎄 6. Use LED Lights
LED lights give off much less heat, reducing drying.
Always switch lights off overnight or when you're out.
🎄 7. Don’t Add Sugary Water or Fertilizers
Myths like adding sugar, lemonade, bleach, or aspirin don’t help.
Normal and plain tap is best.
🎄 8. Sweep Needles Regularly (It’s Normal!)
Some shedding is normal. Excessive shedding may mean:
The tree is too warm
It’s not getting enough water
Adjust as needed.

🎄 9. Recycling After Christmas
Most areas offer:
Curbside collection
Chipping/recycling drop-off sites
Garden waste programs
