Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to use a post repair spike – also known as a post support spike or repair spur. It's typically used to fix or reinforce a broken wooden fence post without digging out the original concrete base.
🛠️ What You'll Need:
Post repair spike (also called a repair spur or drive-in spike)
Hammer or sledgehammer
Spirit level
Adjustable spanner or wrench
Protective gear (gloves, safety glasses, etc.)
Fence post (if replacing)
📍 How to Use a Post Repair Spike:
1. Assess the Damage
If the post is just loose or snapped at the base, a repair spike can be used to support it without needing to dig out the old post.
2. Remove the Damaged Section (If Necessary)
Cut off the rotten or broken part of the post flush with the ground if it’s too damaged.
Leave enough of the post standing to secure it in the spike.
3. Position the Repair Spike
Place the spike next to the broken post or in the original position if you're replacing the post.
Use a driving tool (or a block of wood) to protect the top of the spike as you drive it into the ground.
4. Drive It into the Ground
Use a sledgehammer to drive the spike in vertically.
Keep checking with a spirit level to ensure it stays straight.
Drive the spike until the base plate is flush with the ground.
5. Insert the Fence Post
Slot the new or repaired fence post into the clamp section of the spike.
Ensure it is straight and at the correct height.
6. Secure the Post
Tighten the bolts using a spanner or wrench to firmly grip the post.
Check again with a spirit level before fully tightening.
✅ You're Done!
The post repair spike should now provide a solid, stable base without needing to dig or use concrete.
