A toilet cistern that is constantly running is usually caused by one of the following common issues:

🔧 1. Faulty Flapper or Flush Valve

Problem: The rubber flapper (or flush valve seal) inside the cistern isn't sealing properly.

Fix: Check if it's worn, warped, or dirty. If so, clean it or replace it.

💧 2. Float Is Set Too High

Problem: If the float is too high, the water level rises above the overflow tube and keeps running.

Fix: Adjust the float so the water level stays about 1 inch below the overflow pipe.

🔁 3. Fill Valve Not Shutting Off

Problem: The fill valve might be stuck or broken, constantly allowing water in.

Fix: Try cleaning it or replace the valve if it’s old or faulty.

🧼 4. Dirt or Debris in the Mechanism

Problem: Grit inside the fill valve or flush mechanism can prevent proper sealing.

Fix: Turn off the water supply, flush the toilet, and clean the parts.

👨‍🔧 When to Call a Professional

If you're not confident doing the above or have tried and it's still running, it might be best to get a plumber or handyman to take a look—it’s usually a quick and inexpensive fix.
