Painting a garage door is a great way to boost curb appeal and protect the surface from the elements. Here’s a step-by-step guide with tips to help you do it right — whether it's metal, wood, or composite.
🧰 What You’ll Need:
Exterior paint (metal or wood-specific)
Exterior primer (if needed)
Wire brush or sandpaper (120–180 grit)
Degreaser or mild detergent
Bucket, sponge or cloth
Painter’s tape
Dust sheet or plastic sheeting
Paintbrush, roller, or sprayer
Safety gear: gloves, eye protection, mask
✅ Step-by-Step Tips:
1. Choose the Right Day
Tip: Paint on a dry day with mild temperatures (ideally between 10°C–25°C) and no direct sunlight.
Why: Paint dries too fast in sun and too slow in cold or humid weather.
2. Clean the Surface Thoroughly
Wash the door with warm soapy water or a degreaser.
Remove dirt, mildew, oil, and cobwebs.
Tip: Rinse well and allow to dry completely before painting.
3. Remove Old Flaking Paint (if needed)
Use a wire brush or sandpaper to scrape off peeling or flaky areas.
Tip: Sand glossy finishes to help the new paint adhere better.
4. Protect Surrounding Areas
Use painter’s tape on edges, handles, and seals.
Lay down dust sheets to protect driveways or garage floors.
5. Apply Primer (if needed)
Metal door? Use a rust-inhibiting metal primer.
Wood door? Use a wood primer to seal the surface.
Tip: Skip primer only if the door was previously painted and it's still in good condition (and you're using a paint/primer combo).
6. Start Painting
Use a paint specifically designed for exterior surfaces.
Start with recessed panels using a brush.
Then use a roller for flat surfaces and to even out brush strokes.
Tip: Apply 2 thin coats instead of 1 thick coat. Let the first coat dry fully (check can for timing).
7. Let It Dry Fully
Keep the door open (if possible) while drying to avoid sticking.
Avoid touching or closing the door until the paint is fully cured (may take 24–48 hours).
8. Finishing Touches
Remove painter’s tape carefully.
Touch up any missed spots.
Clean brushes and rollers if you plan to reuse them.
🎨 Extra Tips:
Use satin or semi-gloss paint – they’re durable and easier to clean than matte finishes.
Consider spraying for large doors – if you’re confident and want a smooth, factory-like finish.
Avoid painting in windy conditions – debris and dust can stick to wet paint.
